“Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.”
- Luke 23:34

More profound words have never been spoken.  Forgiveness is such an important part of our journey of faith.  Our practice of faith includes forgiveness on a number of levels.  We need to forgive those who have hurt us.  We need to forgive ourselves when we have hurt others.  We need to receive forgiveness from others and most importantly from God.  But sometimes that is hard to do.  We tend to hold onto grudges and quickly forget the admonishment from Jesus to forgive.  We tend to hold onto our sin and guilt rather than accept forgiveness when it is offered.  It is so very simple in theory, yet so very complicated in practice.   And yet each Sunday as we recite the Lord’s Prayer, we are reminded…Forgive us our debts (sins) as we forgive our debtors (those who have sinned against us).  It is central to living the Christian life.

It is important that we keep this idea of forgiveness close as we begin the season of Lent.  It is a season where we intentionally look closely at our need to repent from all that separates us from God and to accept the grace we have already been given in Jesus Christ.  In the act of turning away from our sin and guilt, we actually begin to turn our hearts toward God.  It prepares us to receive the full blessing of Jesus’ Resurrection.

As Jesus was hanging on the cross, his first thought was to forgive those who were killing him.  How profound is that love?  It is a love that knows no boundaries and extends to us the possibility for restoration and hope in our life together.   I am sure we all have folks we need to forgive, and we have those we need to ask for forgiveness.  Now is the time!  For in the act of forgiveness, we live out the grace of Jesus Christ.   Arden Mead writes this short piece of prose in reflecting on Jesus’ act of forgiveness at the cross:

“This is where we learn how, isn’t it?
This is also where we learn why
   And who and whom…
    And when…and where
     But mostly how.”

It is all part of our Lenten journey!  May you discover the depth of God’s forgiveness in this season of hope.

See you in Church,
Rev. Thom Lamb

“There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope of your calling, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all who is above all and through all and in all.”             ~ Ephesians 4:4-5

The last two weeks I have spent a lot of time thinking about God’s call.  Paul’s words from Ephesians ring in my heart as I prepare to join you all at Grace church.  The last few weeks have been a myriad of leavings, saying good bye to so many friends, final sermon and worship services, and loving celebrations.   This has been wonderful, but it pales in comparison to the joy that I feel as I consider God’s call and what lies before us as we begin a new journey together.

The last of my belongings are now packed in the trunk and backseat of my car and tomorrow morning I will begin the 20 hour journey to Temple, Texas.  Lori and Kim and I will say our temporary goodbyes in the morning and I will stop and have breakfast with my son, Doug on the way at Wright State in Dayton, OH, then miles of open road.  Doug will be in Temple for a week beginning March 17th for his spring break, and Lori and Kim will follow on his heels arriving on the 24th, so you will finally have the opportunity to meet my children.  It will be a new challenge for us to live apart for a few months; however, we all agree that it is for the best so Kim can graduate with her class from Granville High School.

I am deeply grateful for all the work that the PNC, Property Team and Allyn Testroet, Kathy Vineyard, Dave Hermann, and Kirk and Carol Fischer have done to make this move as painless as possible.

I will be spending the week before I officially begin on February 1st, getting settled, perhaps playing a little golf and getting my bearings in Temple.    I look forward to getting to know you so we can discover together all that God has called us to be and to do.

Faithfully and Joyfully In Christ,

Thom

Welcome Breakfast for New Pastor

Rev. Thom Lamb– will begin work on February 1 with his first worship service on February 5. Between the 8:50 and 11 a.m. worship services a breakfast will be held to welcome Thom into our Grace family. At the breakfast we will present our Texas style ―Old Fashioned Pounding‖. Please bring a grocery item that weighs about one pound to get them started in their new home--one pound of coffee, sugar, peanut butter, or ramen (be creative and practical—boxes or cans of food, cleaning sup-plies, even toilet paper, paper towels, etc.). Financial donations would also be acceptable and we will purchase some refrig-erator/freezer items.
